Can Slack Search Find Files in Deactivated Accounts?
Yes, Slack search can find a user's messages and files even after account deactivation. Removing a user from Slack means disabling their account rather than permanently deleting it, which means you can still access the user’s messages. Here's how to do it. ✶ Find out if Slack messages are end-to-end encrypted How to Find Deactivated Account Files on Slack Slack doesn't remove a user’s messages if their account is deactivated or they're removed from a group—other team members will still be able to access these messages. The only way the messages and files will be removed is if the user deleted them before account deactivation. To access these messages and files, follow these steps: Go to People & user groups on the top left portion of the sidebar. If you can’t find it, click More.Open the Filter menu on the right side of the page and click the checkbox for Show deactivated accounts.Find the deactivated user whose files you need and click on their photo. Finally, click the message icon to display the user's message archives and sort through your conversations to find the files. Other Ways to Find Deactivated Account Files Slack Search Another way to find messages and files from a deactivated account is to use Slack search. Simply type from:@username into the search bar, substituting the 'username' portion with the user's name. The search should return messages from the deactivated account. ✶ Want to optimize your Slack search? Enhance your Slack experience with Unleash Keyboard Shortcuts A faster way is to use your keyboard shortcuts for search commands—search for the deactivated member's name using Command + K for Mac or CTRL + K for Windows or Linux, and then review your DM history with them. Are Slack Messages End-to-End Encrypted?
At the heart of the encryption debate is the question of whether messaging platforms like Slack are end-to-end encrypted. End-to-end encryption means messages sent on these platforms can be read only by the sender and recipient and no one else, including the platform’s administrators. As more and more people have become concerned about their online privacy, end-to-end encryption has become an increasingly important issue in recent years. While many messaging platforms claim to offer end-to-end encryption, there have been doubts about whether these claims are actually true. ✶ Use Unleash to integrate with Slack and your other favorite apps. Why Slack Doesn't Offer End-to-End Encryption Unfortunately, Slack doesn't currently offer end-to-end encryption for its messaging platform because this type of encryption makes it difficult for businesses to comply with legal and regulatory requirements, such as needing to provide data for legal proceedings. Additionally, Slack has pointed out how its platform is designed for team collaboration and communication rather than personal messaging. As such, they argue end-to-end encryption may not be as necessary as it is on personal messaging platforms. In an interview with Vice, a former Slack employee also disclosed that Slack's paying customers—aka enterprises—aren't really keen on end-to-end encryption because it would limit their ability to monitor employee communications. ✶ Slack has other frustrating features as well: learn why Slack search sucks and how Unleash can help. Slack's Enterprise Key Management (EKM) Feature Despite its lack of an end-to-end encryption, Slack EKM provides businesses with the ability to encrypt messages and files using their own keys that are stored in Amazon’s Key Management Service (AWS KMS). If a key needs to be revoked, administrators can do so granularly without disrupting the workflow for teams. Slack's advantages in terms of bettering your team's communication seem to outweigh its shortcomings in the long run, even taking into account its problems with search—you can help your employees overcome this issue with comprehensive intranet search. ✶ Find out how you can Slack search deactivated accounts. Conclusion Ultimately, it's up to each individual or business to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of end-to-end encryption and decide whether it's necessary for their specific needs. No matter your choice, Unleash integrates with Slack and offers a streamlined, comprehensive enterprise search solution that encompasses all the features you need in an enterprise search tool to boost your company's efficiency.
