What are some examples of a federated search?

Asked 9 months ago

Hi all. I understand that a federated search is a method that searches for information from multiple data sources at the same time. However, I'm having trouble coming up with any kind of examples. Can anyone give me an example or two of a federated search? Thanks.

A federated search is a system specifically designed to provide users with a unified interface for conducting search processes across different computer networks, that are otherwise isolated from other. In other terms, it is simply a module of the network that brings multiple results for a single internet query. Some examples of a federated search are search enterprises conducted in Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, AOL, Excite, DuckDuckGo etc. When a particular keyword is inputted into any of the search engines, it does an automatic compilation of search results gathered from various websites and pages of the Internet.

Federated search helps the users to get aggregated results and compare them for the best choice. It collects data from multiple sources and shows them in a single interface. Mostly the sources are web pages on search engines.

The simplest example of a federated search is a website named Kayak. This site extracts flight data from multiple websites and presents it to make it comparable for the users.

More federated search examples like Yahoo, Baidu, Google, and DuckDuckGo use federated search indexes and multi-database management systems for exact and accurate results.

A federated search is a type of search that allows you to find information across multiple databases. While there are many different approaches to federated search, they all fall under two fundamental processes: indexing and searching. The first involves creating a comprehensive list of your system's data points. The other is the process that helps users find what they're looking for. Based on this explanation, Yahoo, Bing, Kayak, and Google are all excellent examples of federated searches.
