How does Amazon CloudFront work?

Asked 2 years ago

I am slowly getting into the world of content delivery and am trying to assess all the options available to me to use. I have heard about Amazon CloudFront, but I wasn’t sure how to navigate it or how it works essentially. Does anyone know the core function?

Amazon CloudFront provides you with data through a network of data centers, namely edge locations, present all across the globe. If the content you demand is present somewhere in the edge location, it delivers the content immediately. However, if there isn't any similar content in the edge location, then CloudFront will extract it from the origin you provided. Using AWS Network backbone reduces the number of networks the user requests must pass through. Therefore, it helps improve the performance.
